Indian history is widely divided into four broad periods which is quite similar to other ancient cultures of the world.
Pre-history
According to the Ancient history of India, the period from the primeval swamp and the Indus Valley Civilization, the period is considered as pre-history. It actually includes everything that has happened before the world happened. Although the script for the Indus valley civilization has not been decoded as yet, it is included in the ancient history as well.
Ancient History
Ancient history for India starts with Indus valley civilization which is quite a debatable issue between historians as they tend to disagree on 3000BC. It begins from 700-800BC just after King Harsh Vardhana.
Medieval History
Medieval history starts from 800BC to middle of the 18th century AD. It sees the coming of the British in India who were clearly marking their presence in India by then. This time is usually accepted by historians as they cannot clearly mark one single day as the beginning of the British kingdom.
Modern History
Modern history of India dates back to middle of the eighteenth century till august 15, 1947 when India got independence. World historians have deplored the lack of historical sense in Indian historians which has made their work quite tough. It is disheartening to see that Indian still lack the sense to mark the history and much is not being done. Indian government had commissioned the series years ago to counter the British series on the subject. The series is still to be published.
